"Reunion Update and Thanksgiving Wishes"

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m writing this as we get our motor running and head out on the highway driving from Florida to Port Jefferson to see Dad for Thanksgiving this year.  At 93, he can no longer make the trek to Florida for the holidays and warm weather so the sisters are taking turns visiting and I’ve got Thanksgiving.

This is my holiday for refection of Thanksgiving’s past and remember family gatherings with all the young dudes, nine cousins, to Grandmother’s house we go in time to watch the Thanksgiving Parade on her color TV followed by King Kong and Mighty Joe Young on the Million Dollar Movie in black and white.

The preparations were organized by the women with the men left to set up tables and chairs and watch us kids when they weren’t smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo.  I remember being horrified by the homemade mincemeat pie that only made an appearance on Thanksgiving.  I just looked at it with curiosity every year wondering how the grown-ups could eat a pie with meat in it for dessert and like it!

Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving!

"I Was Lost But Now I’m Found"

So writes Christine Damarodas Sargent in her recent email to me with her contact information.  I am not sure she even knows this back story but here it is.  Those of us that attended the April 2022 Commack North & South reunion in Delray Beach, Florida were surprised to see Chris on the “Memorial” poster.  While working on finding classmates, AnnMarie DelPizzo Martin (Class of 1971 Reunion Chair) spoke to Chris’ brother Bob who said she was very much alive, living in Maine and passed on her address.

Back in February, I sent a letter to Chris about our upcoming reunion and last month I finally heard from her!  Turns out, she is an official Florida snowbird, happy to be found and looking forward to our reunion.
